Sandra Kay Wilks Honea, age 77, went to be with Jesus, on January 22, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers. She was born on April 24,1941, in St. Louis, Missouri to Winifred Benn Nettles and James Wilks. At a young age she moved to Houston where she spent the majority of her life. She attended Southmayd Elementary, Deady Jr. High and Milby High School where she met the love of her life, Boyce Honea. Sandra and Boyce were married on September 11, 1959. They were married for 59 years and were a shining example of a loving, Christ-centered marriage.
For 25 years, Sandra worked at Park Place Baptist Church in a variety of roles. She started out as secretary to the youth pastor, was then the pastor's secretary to two different pastors and finally was named Administrative Assistant to the church business administrator. The youth ministry at Park Place was impacted by Sandra as well. She served for many years in the High School Sunday School Department. In addition to her career and ministry at Park Place, Sandra stood alongside her husband during his 35 years of coaching and teaching at Milby High School. They also served together through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Houston and after retirement in Corpus Christi. Together, they impacted hundreds of lives over the years.
Sandra loved taking pictures and was seldom seen at any game, event or family activity without her camera. After retirement, she lovingly put together scrapbooks that chronicled not only her family and their lives, but also Milby basketball and FCA events. She was an amazing seamstress and a whiz with computers. She could paint walls, hang wallpaper and filet speckled trout. There were very few things she couldn't do!
Sandra's greatest characteristic was her ability to love others well. She adored her own children and grandchildren but also loved the students and athletes that they ministered to over the years. She will always be remembered cheering in the stands of hundreds of Milby games and the games of her grandchildren.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Winifred and Bill Nettles and James O. Wilks; brothers, Richard Wilks and James Wilks. Sandra is survived by her husband, James Boyce Honea; son, Barron Honea and wife, Darla; daughter, Paula and husband, Mark Smith; grandchildren, Bryce and wife, Alisha, Trevor, Peyton and Whitney Smith; sister-in-law, Mona Rae White and nephews, nieces and cousins. She is also survived by a multitude of friends and former players whom she loved.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 6-9 pm at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home in Houston, Texas. A Celebration of Life service will be on Wednesday, January 30 at 1:00 at Sagemont Church-Hughes Road Auditorium. Graveside service will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetary.
In addition, a Celebration of Life will be held in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Sunday, February10, at 3 pm at Yorktown Baptist Church.
