Sophia was born March 17, 1924 near Berezhaney, Ukraine. She was studying dentistry when World War 2 forced the family to leave. Sophia eventually ended up in Canada where she met her husband Julian and they had their first 4 children. After years in Canada, she reunited with her sister and parents in Houston, Texas where she had the last two of her children and lived for the remainder of her life.
Sophia was a wife and mother taking care of her six children, husband, and home. She was an amazing cook and the family will forever remember the wonderful meals she could create.
Along with her husband, sister, and parents, Sophia was an original founding member of St. Pius X Ukrainian Catholic Church, later renamed Pokrova in Houston and remained active in the church as long as her health allowed her to. She was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage and a member of the Ukrainian American Cultural Club of Houston. She was a supporter of the annual Sts. Cyril & Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival where she managed the Ukrainian cultural booth along with her sister, Helen Kichtan.
She was preceded in death by her parents Teodor and Maria Telezda, her loving husband of many years Julian Tymniak, her sister Helen Kichtan and brother-in-law Stefan Kichtan.
She is survived by her children Roman Tymniak, Mark Tymniak, Irene Howard, Lydia Fant, Andrey Tymniak, and Larissa Broussard and her grandchildren Michael Tymniak, Nicholas Tymniak, Alex Tymniak, Alyssa Howard, Danielle Howard, James Broussard, Gabrielle Broussard, and Natalie Broussard as well as two great-grandsons, Nathaniel and Miles Tymniak.
The family will receive friends on Thursday July 23 from 3:00-5:00 with the Panachyda prayer service beginning at 4:30 in the chapel of Earthman-Resthaven Funeral Home.
The funeral services will be held on Friday July 24 at 2:00 at Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church. Interment services will follow at Earthman-Resthaven Cemetery.
