Stephen was born June 29, 1964 in Compton, California. He attended South Houston Highschool and went on to receive his HVAC Industrial Technology certification at San Jacinto College. Stephen perfected his craft for 20+ years in the refineries throughout the Houston/Galveston region. Stephen enjoyed being a parishioner and usher at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He married the love of his life Lisa. They were married in the Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Houston, Texas on September 16, 1995. They made 25 years together in happy matrimony. Although he would deny it, he and Aunt Lisa would spoil each other, when they had the chance.
Stephen, was what we would like to call an “uncle in a million”. He was our “Uncle Steve,” as he was called by nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Even friends, the local baseball park community, and people he just met would address him as “Uncle Steve”. Stephen did not have any children of his own, so his nieces, nephews, and God-children were like his own. He also coached more than half of them in baseball. As you can imagine, he had the biggest heart in the world. He was always lending a hand to family and friends when he could. He looked forward to the happiness it brought to them. There were instances when people called him as he would clock out of work to service their air conditioners. Without hesitation, he stated “I’ll be there in a few.”
Stephen loved to be out and about; being a part of the camaraderie. He enjoyed everyone’s company; always smiling or making you laugh with his “Uncle Steve” jokes. He loved taking pictures and recording videos at events. At one wedding, they hired a videographer. Yet, he still walked around with his camera acting like he was the videographer. He didn’t get paid to do it. The collection of memories was his reward. He has over a trillion photos saved on thousand thumb drives. Those numbers don’t compare to the music library he stored. It seemed like he downloaded every song that was created. Oh, he loved Tejano music! Jay Perez to be exact. Every time music was on, he would do the same dance and pretend to break the same hip. We would laugh every time like it was the first time.
Uncle Steve always found a way to ensure he served others by his acts of public service. He was always committed to his community little league where all the children and families knew him for his bear hugs and grandiose laughter. Stephen volunteered at OFA baseball park for over 20 years. He coached many teams at all levels. He dedicated much of his time after work at practice; cleaning the fields and operating the concession stand. He became a board member and the President of the league. He even had his own item on the menu. It was called “The Uncle Steve Special” – Double meat and double cheese all the way. He made a major impact on all who he touched at the park. He started a new wave by helping OFA receive grants to beautify the park and make it safer. His goal was to make sure every single kid had an opportunity to learn and play the game. He never had a “No” to give and always had cold pickles and fresh popcorn for the little ones. He was selfless and remarkable with impacting so many generations of children's hearts. Uncle Steve created forever memories and developed long lasting bonds with the kids he coached and their families. He hosted the most superb movie nights and always loved to treat his loved ones to dinner dates.
Stephen was an amazing husband, son, brother, cousin, uncle, Godfather and friend. He was a Texans and Astros fanatic like no other could be. Uncle Steve was truly the epitome of a kid at heart. He will always be loved, missed, and cherished.
