Thelma Dean Sandles, known to most as Mama Thelma, was the 5th child of 15 children born on July 4, 1953 to Annie Laura and Willie Edward Sandles in Midway, Texas. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age and attended worship service with her family at Antioch Church of Christ in Midway.
Thelma Dean attended Midway’s public schools and graduated from Madisonville High School. Eventually moving to Houston, she obtained a job at General Electric where she worked for 26 years. While there she received numerous employee recognitions for her years of service.
Also in moving to Houston she meet Charles Harris and mothered one son, Charles Sandles whom she adored. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was well known for her chicken salad and cakes. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone and everyone she met. Thelma thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as laughter filled the room.
She is preceded in death by her loving Mother, Annie Laura Wiley Sandles, Father, Willie Edward “Buddy” Sandles.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her only child, Charles Sandles (Ayria), Sisters; Joyce Randle, Velma Sandles, and Caron Sandles; all of Houston, Texas. Brothers; James “Shorty” Sandles, Ira Sandles Sr., Oscar Sandles (Tracy), Jerrell Sandles (Dorothy), Carl Sandles, C.L. Sandles, Everett Sandles, Floyd Sandles (Cherece); all of Houston, Texas and Freddie Sandles of Midway, Texas. Uncles; Johnnie Wiley (Mary) and James “Odie” Wiley; all of Houston, Texas. Granddaughters; Li’Shalyn Morris-Sandles and Ayrilyn Sandles who she affectionately referred to as “Cat Mama” and host of other relatives and friends.
