Born 10/7/1917, passed peacefully and gratefully away 2/20/2011 after a long and glorious life. He was born the fifth of six children to Henry Neumann and Julia Peschka Neumann and raised in the East End of Houston. He attended Blessed Sacrament Parochial School and Sam Houston High School. He married, and was preceded in death by his friend and wife of 53 years, Lee Dell Barker Neumann of Houston. He served proudly and honorably in the United States Marine Corps and the Texas State Guard. After his service to his country and state, Mr. Neumann went on to work for the Humble Oil and Refining Co. (Exxon) earning his BBA while working there, and retired from a senior management position after 43 years of service, in 1979. He was an early resident of Garden Villas Community and a founding member of the Volunteer Fire Dept. there. He was instrumental in the development of Freeway National Little League where he coached for many years and was active in the Mt Carmel Men’s Club from its inception.
He is survived by his children; Mrs. Gerry Watson and her late husband, Jim, of Shenandoah, Texas, their two children and two grandchildren; by Thomas D. Neumann and his wife Susan of Sheffield, Massachusetts, their four children and nine grandchildren; by Carl H. Neumann and his wife, Joey, of The Woodlands, Texas, their three daughters and three grandchildren; and he is survived by his friend and constant companion, Ms. Enid Moore of Houston, Texas.
Tom Neumann was a proud member of what has been called the “greatest generation.” Though tested by the Great Depression and a World War, he consistently claimed to have been born into the greatest time in history. He was unbowed by the troubles of his world and lifted by the music of his time. He loved his life, his family, his many friends, the Marine Corps, the Aggie spirit, all sports, the Frio River and the great outdoors. Through many years of hunting, fishing or golf he cherished his many friends and family and delighted in the life lessons he taught to those that were blessed by his friendship and counsel. There weren’t many like him in our lives and his spirit will be missed by all who knew him. Semper Fi.
