Truman (Shorty) Lee Haley passed away after a long illness on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at his home in Houston, Texas. He was born in Bath, NY on January 19, 1941 the third son of Coy E. Haley and Jewell M. (Triplett) Haley.
Truman graduated from Haverling Central High School in Bath, NY in 1960. Shortly after graduating, he moved to Houston to join his father and older brothers, Donald and Keith. He worked for Exxon for a few years traveling around the states building new service stations. When he returned to Houston, he went to work for Wilson’s Office Furniture company as a service and installation technician. Later, Wilson’s was purchased by McCoy’s and he retired from McCoy’s in 2008.
Though he never married or had any children of his own, he had many friends and helped raise many of their children. His home was always open to his friends and a lot of barbecues were held there. In earlier years, if not at home you could find him with his friends and family at Charlie T’s ice house or at the family cottage in Bolivar. Shorty was a very giving person and would do most anything to help a friend, including giving them a place to live. He was a benefactor to all.
Truman was predeceased by his father, Coy E. Haley and stepmother, Irene Haley; his mother, Jewell M. Pickering and stepfather, DeWitt G. Pickering; brothers; Donald E. Haley and Keith L. Haley; stepsisters, Earlene Jackson and Lois Collard; niece, Tara V. Haley; nephews, Brett C. Haley and Danny Jackson and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by brothers, DeWitt Pickering Jr. (Hardy, Arkansas), Ray Pickering (Wheeler, NY) and David Haley (Houston, TX); sister, Linda Pickering (Bath, NY) and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
