Virgie was born on January 18, 1937 in Houston, TX to John Carl and Jennie (Marino) Canino. She grew up in what was then a farming community in Aldine, TX in a house on the corner of Little York and Airline Dr. and was the youngest of 3 children. She attended Incarnate Word Academy in Houston, was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, and worked for the Aldine Independent School District for many years in administrative roles as well as in the tax office. On September 28, 1958 she married George Emmett Slater. Together they raised one son, Emmett Craig Slater.
Virgie was known for her quick wit and fun-loving personality. She had a knack for making people laugh and loved being surrounded by friends and family. She especially enjoyed hosting birthday parties, family get-togethers and holiday events. She was always warm and welcoming to all who attended. She also loved to cook. She always said she only knew one way to cook – for lots of people! She learned from her mother, Jennie, who was known to always cook enough for a neighbor or family member that might stop by. One of her favorite things to cook was her mother’s “famous” made-from-scratch spaghetti and meatballs.
Virgie loved children. She loved to spoil her grandkids, nieces and nephews and was known to have some mischievous adventures while babysitting. One of her favorite things to do was spend a week every summer at the beach in Galveston. The more kids that were there, the happier it made her. She loved her family.
After she retired, Virgie became a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing games and traveling with her Red Hatter friends. Often, Emmett would join her on her trips. One of their most memorable trips was to the Holy Land.
One of Virgie’s most admirable qualities was her servant’s heart. She and Emmett both had a servant’s heart – they always made time to help a friend, family member, or neighbor in need. They spent many hours volunteering in their local community at the Houston Food Bank and at Doss Park community events.
Virgie was preceded in death by her husband George Emmett Slater, her parents John Carl and Jennie Canino, and her brother Joseph (Peewee) Canino. She is survived by her son Craig Slater and wife Lauren, her three grandchildren, Jeff, Eric and Kellie, her brother Johnny (Juna) Canino and wife Louise, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 17th, at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home and Cemetery, 13102 North Fwy, Houston, TX 77060 at 2 pm, and will be followed by a graveside service at the cemetery. Visitation will begin prior to the service at 1 pm.
