A very special and dear friend of out family here in Oklahoma.
I met his family in 1962 when I  looking for a place to live while  an intern at the V.A.  I move into their garage apartment, - a week later, my first child was born.  She became part of their family for they did not have children.

Bill was very caring and thoughtful as was all his family.

Oh no, Mr. Bill. Little Lake Street in Bellaire and the world has lost the kindest, most thoughtful, and most caring soul in Bill McKenzie who died in his sleep on July 15, 2020, almost exactly three months before his 91st birthday. It is easy to surmise that in Bill we saw Christ-like compassion, love, and caring for those in need whether it was a blind neighbor that he fed and took care of the last six years of his life, a disabled neighbor that he helped for 22 years, his animals, or the orchids, plumerias, aspidistras, bromeliads, and countless other plants he lovingly tended throughout his life. He was a lover of the arts. He enjoyed recording classical music. He had personal relationships with many of Houston’s wealthiest business leaders. Throughout his life he enjoyed many trips to Mexico. He even made one of his beautiful fountains for the president of Mexico. When he said he once met actress Hedy Lamarr it seemed to confirm he pretty much knew everybody. It is a comfort that you are once again with your parents, brother Bob, and close friend Howard.

You were a blessing to all that crossed your path and for three decades I was the fortunate recipient of your caring nature. There have been countless hundreds of times over the past 39 years that you’ve come to my rescue in one way or another. After I developed multiple sclerosis the universe apparently knew what I would need the most as time went by so my heart was led to the house on Little Lake Street. Little did I know at the time a kind soul awaited my arrival.

Mere words of thanks are woefully inadequate to convey the immense gratitude & appreciation I feel for our decades of friendship and the innumerable things you have done to help me. It brings tears when I recall the countless times over the decades that you dropped what you were doing and immediately came to my assistance. Over the years I have marveled that no matter what I needed help with you invariably had the part, the item, or the solution.   

I could not have continued to live alone on Little Lake were it not for you. You have singlehandedly enhanced the quality of my life. My life continues to be a life worth living because of everything you have done to make my life better. It has been a huge comfort to know that you routinely had me in your thoughts & prayers. My mother has always been thankful that you continuously monitored my well-being. 

I have known for a long time that I would one day miss you being in my life but I didn’t anticipate how terribly sad I would be that you were no longer on the street. Everywhere I turn I see evidence of the countless hundreds of things you unselfishly and lovingly did to make my life better. Your frugal and rather simple ways made it nearly impossible to ever repay you for the hundreds of kindnesses you showered on me for thirty-nine years. 

Thanks, Bill, for being such a great neighbor and friend.

A quiet and gentle soul Bill saw beauty in everything and captured it in his artwork. He loved helping other’s and feeding stray animals .You will live on in our memories for years to come.


Bill was a kind man who knew how to treat others with respect.  He was an accomplished artist and sculptor and truly loved his craft.    Bill was a man of principals and was devoted to his parents cared for them till their time came to go home to our Lord.
Needless to say he will be missed by extended family and friends.
He now joins Mom and Pop McKenzie and his brother Bob McKenzie in heaven...the circle is no longer broken.  May they all Rest In Peace.
