She grew up in East Texas, graduating from New Diana High School, followed by a move to Houston,
where she earned an Associate Degree and RN certification from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. While in nursing school, she met the love of her life, Paul Johnston. Paul and Faye were married in a Houston chapel on June 25, 1949. Their first child, Paula, was born in 1950, followed by their son, Gordon, who arrived in 1961. During their early marriage, Faye continued working at St. Joseph’s and Jefferson Davis Hospitals, where she was respected by both colleagues and patients. Faye devoted herself to comforting those in her care.
When Faye retired from nursing, she turned to her second love: antiques. After collecting special pieces for many years, Faye opened “Faye Johnston Antiques” in Richmond, Texas, her home after moving from Houston. Faye’s expertise was recognized by a variety of fellow antiques dealers, who sought her appraisal advice on items ranging from massive Victorian chests to delicate Asian porcelains. Faye also put her heart into her Greek Revival house, designated as an official Texas Historical site. She and Paul spent many happy years there together, taking pride in the house they nurtured and loved.
When Paul passed in 2012, after receiving “the best nursing care in the world” from Faye, she continued living in their home, until recently moving to Clayton Oaks Assisted Living, where she received compassionate care. Until the end Faye was blessed with a group of devoted friends. She always stated, “I don’t know what I would do without my friends.” Faye passed away on September 28, survived by her daughter, Paula; son, Gordon; and granddaughter, Miranda, as well as her beloved cousin, Jenell Lawrence, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Forest Park Funeral Home, Houston, at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 7. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a later date.
