LTC (Ret) Anthony E. Stermer, 78, of Huntsville, AL completed his tour of duty on this Earth on Thursday, 28 September 2023. Tony was born in Cincinnati, OH on September 28, 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony A.F. Stermer and Shirley Alma Thomas Stermer.
Tony began life in a very humble way, born at home in a small apartment in Cincinnati. At his age six weeks, the family moved to his grandparents' farm in Faubush (Pulaski County), Kentucky. He lived in Pulaski County until he completed high school in 1964. He then attended the University of Kentucky until he was drafted during the Vietnam War. After Vietnam duty, he returned to UK to complete his degree and earned his Army commission. His duty stations included Fort Bragg, NC; Fort Knox, KY; Fort Bliss, TX; Ansbach, Germany; Storck Barracks, Germany; Fort Irwin CA; Redstone Arsenal, AL; Birmingham and Montgomery, AL; as well as Fort McPherson, GA; and the Pentagon, DC.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Jo Carol Stermer; two sons, James Stermer (Susanne), Adam Stermer; older brother, Gary Popplewell; grandchildren, Nicholas Stermer (Breanne), Grace Stermer, Atticus Plott, Finn Stermer and Gwynevere Stermer; one great granddaughter, Addison Stermer and an upcoming great granddaughter.
Tony retired from the United States Army with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He loved UK basketball, the outdoors, spending time with his horses, dogs and cats. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, desert exploring and hiking along with anything to do with being on or in the water. He participated with his family in German volksmarches every weekend for two years. He loved to travel the world and explore new places with his family.
A Visitation for Anthony will be held Sunday, October 1, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home & Memory Gardens, 698 Winchester Rd NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811 followed by, a Celebration of Life Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 3:00 PM. An interment with Full Military Honors will occur Monday, October 2, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Hwy 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.
