Betty or (Mimaw), as she was known to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was born March 4, 1935 in Maysville, AL to Roy Erskine Swafford and Mary O’Rear Swafford. Betty had one daughter, Elizabeth, who was her pride and joy! She devoted her life to not only Elizabeth, but to her precious nest of grandchildren and great grandchildren. She seemed to have an unique and special way to love each and every one of them, including Kirsten Williams, Kaitlin Williams, David Pitts, Makayla Rae Burks, Noah Shaw, Jayden Burks, Silas Burks, Isabelle Renee Burks, Natalee Burks, Little Nathan Burks, Little Chrispian Burks and also to her 7 year old great granddaughter Nataee Burks, whom she was maternally attached to and involved with in every aspect of life from school room to church, and was a part of her young world, educating Natalie in the importance of prayer and reading her Bible.
Betty also enjoyed reading the Bible and sharing her faith with all of the children within her family. She was a great witness of a walk in Christ!
Betty was a faithful and loving member of Huntsville Park Baptist Church for 50 years; she was loyal to her congregation and her pastor! Betty loved her large family, adored spending time, holidays, and special days with them as it brought her great joy!
Betty was a loyal secretary to the Commanding General and other top ranking officials at Redstone Arsenal for many years until her retirement. In addition to being a patriotic person and a diehard republican all of her life, she was a passionate Crimson Tide fan “Roll Tide”! Through the years, Betty enjoyed volunteering her time where ever she was needed. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, being an Avon lady and especially cooking was a delight!
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Erskine and Mary O’Rear Swafford; her husband Joe Franklin Butler and her brother Roy Swafford.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Burks and her husband, George; five grandsons, Chrispian and wife Erin, Anthony and wife Jennifer, Nathan, Jason, Adam and wife Laura; granddaughter, Tammy Burks and several great grandchildren.
Betty was well loved and respected by all friends and family and we rejoice in her home coming.
