

Surrounded by friends and family, Charles R. Byrd, age 74 of Huntsville, Alabama passed away Sunday night, March 6, 2016. He was born on May 5, 1941 to the late Bettie Eliza and Willie Haper Byrd in Warsaw, North Carolina. After graduating high school, Charles joined the United States Army and served over 20 years of distinguished service. During his career, he served two tours in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart for injuries received in combat in the line of duty.
Upon retiring from the Army, Charles worked as a ROTC Instructor and Rifle Team coach at Grissom High School, Huntsville, Alabama. After another decade of service to his community, he retired once again, but this time due to being diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer. He was an eighteen year survivor.
He was known as “Sarge” by friends and acquaintances and lovingly called “Pops” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Kay Utterback; brother, Billy Byrd; and sister, Ruth Inman.
Charles is survived by his oldest daughter, Patricia “Lynn” (and husband, Rich) Houghton; granddaughter, Robin (and husband, Jerry) Boatwright; grandson, Roger “Keith” (and wife, Renee) Utterback; great grandchildren, Andrew “Drew” Ford, Ella Utterback and Benjamin “Ben” Cain.
