

Ms. Clara Lynn Townsend Appleton entered into eternal rest on February 21, 2026, at the home of her daughter Melanie, in Huntsville, Alabama, surrounded by love and peace. She departed this life with grace, dignity, and the assurance that she was deeply loved, leaving behind a legacy rooted in faith, family, compassion, and service to others.
Clara Townsend Appleton was born to the Elder John B. Townsend, Sr., and Arcie Studdard Townsend on December 29, 1953 in Huntsville, Alabama, where she lived her entire life. Huntsville was not only her birthplace, it was also the community she poured herself into, built relationships within, and remained devoted to throughout her life’s journey.
Clara graduated from Cavalry Hill School in northwest Huntsville and from S.R. Butler High School in Huntsville, Alabama, and later earned her Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration from the Calhoun Community College in Decatur, Alabama.
From her marital union with her late husband, three wonderful children were born: Brian Paul Appleton, April Michele Appleton, and Melanie Dawn Appleton.
Clara Appleton dedicated many years to administrative work, where she was respected for her professionalism, attention to detail, warm personality, and dependable nature. During the course of her professional career was a buyer at ADTRAN, bringing expertise in procurement within the telecommunication equipment sector; a Business Administrator at Nexus Energy Center, a Data Analysis Technician at Jacobs and as an IT healthcare customer service representative at Alorica, Inc. She retired in February 2022 after years of faithful service.
Faith was truly the foundation of Ms. Appleton’s life. She confessed hope in Jesus Christ at an early age at the Taylor’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. Sister Clara was a devoted member of Taylor’s Chapel P.B. Church, where she faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher and choir director for the Taylor's Chapel Youth Choir and the Young Adult Choir. sharing both her voice and her spirit with the congregation. Later, she moved her membership to The Rock Family Worship Center (The Rock Church), Huntsville, Alabama, where she continued growing in faith, fellowship, and service.
Clara Appleton lived what she believed. Known as a prayer warrior, she consistently encouraged others spiritually, often reminding family and friends, “Pray about it and leave it in God’s hands.” One of her favorite scriptures, Psalm 23, reflected the peace, trust, and unwavering faith she carried throughout her life. Her spiritual influence extended far beyond her immediate family, touching countless lives through encouragement, prayer, kindness, and example.
Ms. Appleton will always be remembered for her infectious smile, genuine love for people, and warm, uplifting presence. Clara was loving, funny, caring, deeply spiritual, and always ready with encouragement, laughter, or wise counsel. She had a special way of making people feel welcomed, valued, and loved, leaving lasting impressions on everyone she encountered.
Clara Lynn Appleton was preceded in death by her beloved parents, John B. and Arcie S. Townsend; two beloved children, Brian Paul Appleton and April Michele Appleton; two precious sisters, Linda Faye Townsend and Dianne Townsend; and her former husband.
Clara Lynn Townsend Appleton leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Melanie Appleton; her beloved grandchildren, Brianna Appleton, Amari Williams, Nadia Tyler, Kenyetta Appleton, Simone Appleton, Brian M Appleton; great-grandchildren, Brayelle Appleton and Brooklyn Appleton; three brothers, Lorenzo D. “Bobby” (Annie) Townsend, John B. (Frances) Townsend, II and Anthony D. (Valerie) Townsend; three sisters, Beverly Hammonds, Glenda K. Woods, and Dr. Thelma M. Townsend ; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, and dear friends who will continue to honor her life and legacy.
As Scripture reminds us: “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”

Her love, faith, and legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held at Valhalla Funeral Home (Huntsville), 698 Winchester, Road NE, Huntsville, AL 35811, on March 4, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Visitation will also be held at Taylor's Chapel Church, 3100 Stringfield Road NW, Huntsville, AL 35810, on March 5, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by the Funeral Service at Taylor's Chapel Church on March 5, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
A Committal Service will take place at Valhalla Memory Gardens & Funeral, 698 Winchester Road NE, Huntsville, AL 35811, on March 5, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm.
