

Errol Hugh Ball, 84, of Athens, Alabama, passed away in his home on January 12, 2025. Hugh was born in Asheville, North Carolina, on March 28, 1940. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Sumerel, step-father, Homer Sumerel, and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 44 years, Charlotte Austin Ball, his son, Randy Ball (Lisa Burns), his daughter, Angie Songy (Jason), and his grandchildren, Sam Songy, Allie Songy, Ethan Ball, Luke Songy, and Demi Songy.
Hugh lived a full life defined by hard work, dedication, and love for his family. From an early age, Hugh demonstrated an exceptional work ethic, earning the respect and admiration of all who worked with him. He graduated from Greenville High School in South Carolina in 1958, and he went on to graduate from Furman University in 1962 with a degree in Physics. He served in the United States Army as an ordnance guided missile officer until 1965, stationed in Seoul, South Korea. Hugh’s professional career began with Sperry Rand (Unisys) working on the Apollo Space Program. In the 1970s, Hugh earned his MBA from Alabama A & M University and went to work for M & S Computing (Intergraph).
After retiring from Intergraph Corporation in 1995, Hugh founded and managed two small businesses. He also served his community in many capacities, including as President of the Kiwanis Club of Athens, Vice-Chair of the Limestone County DHR Quality Assurance Committee, and President of the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce. Hugh served on several boards, including the Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation, the Better Business Bureau of Morgan/Limestone/Lawrence County, and the American Legion Post 49 of Athens. Hugh was a long-time resident of Limestone County, and he found great joy and peace spending time outdoors, on his land or on the water. Hugh always remained humble and kind, and above all, cherished his family.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 18, at 11 am, at Valhalla Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 12 noon. Interment will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
