George Albert Cass, age 92, of Owens Cross Roads, Alabama passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Grandview Medical Center following complications from surgery. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Jewel, his parents, Albert and Betty Cass and his brother, Jeffrey. He is survived by his three children, Marilyn Catanese (Joe), Karen Gill (Roby), David Cass (Donna), his beloved grandchildren, Joseph Catanese, Courtney Gill, Kelsey Gill, Ryan Cass and Scott Cass and his devoted brothers Don (Linda) and Norman (Debi) and many nieces and nephews.
George was born on November 15, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Oak Harbor, Ohio where he met Jewel Kubasek whom he married shortly after high school. They moved to Chicago where George joined the Air Force and was assigned to serve in Greenland. After his military service, he went to work for the US Government as a Mechanical Engineer where he had experience in the areas of logistics, electronics, guided missiles, rockets, laser designators, foreign military sales, project manager’s system assessments and depot operations. His work led him to assignments in Abilene, Texas, Leavenworth, Kansas, Mainz, Germany and finally to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama where he remained until he retired in 1988. He continued to work as a consultant after his retirement.
To his family and close friends, George was our Superman. We all hope we can live our lives as he did for his 92 years. He was active his entire life participating in golf, bowling, biking and skiing which led to his involvement with the Huntsville Ski Club for many years. However, his true passion was ballroom dancing which he enjoyed with Jewel and later in life with USA Dance North Alabama Chapter and the Eagles. He met so many wonderful people in the dance community who became dear friends. When he was not busy with his many activities, George spent his time traveling and cruising the world to places such as Africa, Belize and Cabo San Lucas.
A Memorial Service for George will be held Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 11:30 am at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road, NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811.
