Helen Grace Whiting

Helen Grace Whiting (née White) passed away on August 22, 2026, in Huntsville after a brief illness. The funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Valhalla Funeral Home & Memory Gardens in Huntsville followed by a graveside service for the family.

Helen was born on June 11, 1941, in Auburn, Alabama, to James and Grace White. She grew up in Dothan, Alabama, the youngest of three children. She attended David Lipscomb College for one year before transferring to Auburn University, where she majored in Elementary Education. While in college, she met Larry Whiting. They married in 1963 while he was serving as an active-duty Air Force officer.

Helen and Larry welcomed their oldest son, Scott, in 1964, followed by two additional sons, Stephen in 1967 and Stuart in 1969. While the boys were young, Helen cared for them on her own during the year Larry was stationed in Vietnam.

Helen began her teaching career in 1977 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Over the next 27 years, she taught fifth and sixth grades in Ocean Springs and Clinton, Mississippi. She also earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished her family. A lifelong Christian, she was a member of the Twickenham Church of Christ after many years of membership at the Meadowbrook Church of Christ in Jackson, Mississippi.

Helen will be remembered for the love and devotion she gave to her family, the generations of children she taught, and the quiet strength that sustained her throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; her sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Tammy Whiting and Stuart and Misty Whiting; her grandchildren, Chase Whiting and his wife, Olivia, Amber Elkins and her husband, Carter, Ally Whiting, and Erin Whiting; her great-grandson, Luke Whiting; an expected great-granddaughter, Georgia Ann Elkins; and her brother and sister-in-law, David and Brenda White. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott; her parents, James and Grace White; and her brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Jackie White.
