

He was a graduate of Auburn University receiving B.S. and M.S. degrees. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. Later, he worked at the agriculture substation for Auburn in Clanton, Alabama. It was in Clanton that he met his future wife, Muril Dean Ray Todd. They were married on Valentine’s Day in 1959. He attended graduate school at Ohio State University where he earned a Ph.D. He taught Sociology at David Lipscomb University where he served as an Associate Professor for nearly 34 years. While living in Nashville Tennessee for nearly 60 years he served as a deacon and later as an elder of the Natchez Trace Church of Christ. Muril Todd passed away in December of 2013, and Hollis moved to Huntsville, Alabama in January of 2015. He became an active member of Chase Park Church of Christ where he met Dorothy Crowson. They were married on Aug 31, 2020. His hobbies included gardening, writing letters to the editor about politics and cultural issues, and spending time with family and friends. He stayed active in the lives of the Ray family and with Dorothy’s family. On a daily basis he enjoyed talking with his brother Herman about sports and politics. He was a leader in visitation and personal work at Chase Park. No one around him was a stranger for very long.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends who he impacted during his 89 years of life. He was blessed by God to enjoy good health until his last day with us. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his brother Herman Todd of Madison, AL; his four sons: Howell Todd of Huntsville, AL; Bruce Todd and Teryl of Jackson, AL; Barry Todd and Leigh of Huntsville, AL; and Anthony Todd and Leona of Erwin, TN; and grandchildren: Anderson, Brett, Bethany, Cayley, Grayson, Megan, Tabitha, Sabrina, and Curtis; and Dorothy’s children: Daniel Zimmerman and Angie of Huntsville, AL; Donna Goldsmith of Scottsboro, AL; Lori Smith of Huntsville, AL; and Billy Zimmerman and Trina of Five Points, TN; and her grandchildren: Thomas, Timothy, and Corey; her great grandchildren: Tyler, Peyton, and Caroline. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Muril, and grandson Nicholas.
Visitation for Hollis will be held Friday, October 21, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Chase Park Church of Christ, 1640 Winchester Rd NE, Huntsville, AL followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 PM.
A graveside service with military honors will occur Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 660 Thompson LN, Nashville, TN 37204.
