Early Life
James Frank Stearns was born on August 12, 1931, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to James Howard Stearns and Marie Elizabeth Rollason. He spent his childhood in West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. At the age of twelve, Jim demonstrated a deep commitment to his family by going to work to help support them. Through these early experiences, he developed a strong work ethic that would shape the rest of his life.
Career at Teledyne
After graduating from West Elizabeth High School, Jim embarked on a professional journey at Teledyne, where he specialized in metallurgy. Through dedication and hard work, he advanced to the position of Pressing Superintendent. Due to this promotion Jim relocated his family to Huntsville in 1976, leaving his beloved Pittsburgh area for a better life for his family. His commitment to the company was evident, as he devoted nearly fifty years of his life to Teledyne, exemplifying his strong work ethic and loyalty.
Military Service
Jim proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. He spent three years stationed in Germany, where he achieved the rank of Specialist 3rd Class. During his time in the Army, Jim worked as a code interceptor in ASA (Army Security Agency), contributing to vital communications and security efforts. His service exemplified his commitment to duty and his country, reflecting the same dedication he demonstrated throughout his life.

Jim also had a lifelong love of driving, a pursuit he enjoyed well into his nineties—continuing to drive until the age of 92. In addition to being behind the wheel, he took immense pleasure in working on and restoring cars. This enthusiasm for automobiles was something he shared with his son, Jamie, passing on both his knowledge and his love for the craft.
Together with his wife Marie, Jim was actively involved with the Huntsville Historical Society. The couple regularly participated in Society events, often spending
Sundays enjoying meals and attending fundraisers alongside their fellow members.
