John Lee Fults, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on April 19, 2024, in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama. He was 92 years old. Born to Virnie and Mattie Fults, John was the third of four siblings in a loving family that instilled in him values he carried throughout his life.
John’s journey began in a small Tennessee town, but his ambition and talents led him far beyond. On August 26, 1961, he married Marjorie Anne Simmons. Together, they raised two sons, Jeffrey and Gregory (married to Nicole), and cherished their time with granddaughter Maryanne Floyd (married to Ben) and great-granddaughter Anne Harland Floyd.
John's career was as varied as it was impressive. After earning a Bachelor of Science from Middle Tennessee State University, he dedicated several years to teaching before serving his country in the Navy during the Korean War. John served thirty-four years in the Reserves before retiring from the Air Force, including seven years as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Reserve.
Beyond his military and educational contributions, John was a pioneering NASA engineer at Marshall Space Flight Center. His work on programs such as Apollo, Saturn, Skylab, Titan, the Space Transportation System, Shooting Star, and the Space Station, just to name a few, was pivotal in advancing space exploration. His intellectual pursuits included everything from solving magic squares to studying the Bible and tracing the lineage of thirteen different families as part of his major work, The Leaves of Time.
When not immersed in history or science, John could be found cheering on Alabama football games from the comfort of his living room, studying the Bible, or enjoying time with his family. He was a member of Chase Park Church of Christ. His legacy of curiosity, dedication, and love remains an inspiration to all who knew him.
The Fults family invites those who loved John to join in celebrating his remarkable life at Valhalla Funeral Home & Memory Gardens, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM with services to follow.
