He was born January 9, 1925 in Gadsden, Alabama to the Late Evangelist Elijah Burruss and Nora Baldwin Burruss. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Sue Douglas Burkfield and four siblings, Ruben Burruss, Amos Burruss, Bertha Burruss Mundy and Pearline Burruss Douglas.
Mr. John Burkfield served in the United States Army for five years. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the military, he worked at Redstone Arsenal for 42 years as a Mail Clerk. Mr. Burkfield joined church at an early age under his father, Evangelist Elijah Burruss, as a devoted Christian in Gadsden, Alabama.
He leaves his son, Lee Burkfield (Sue Hawkins Burkfield); one grandson, Frederick Burkfield; two great grandsons, Jeremy Burkfield and Frederick Burkfield, Jr.; one sister-in-law, Effie Gains; a very special nephew, Alfred Douglas; a very, very close friend, Larry Mitchell; and a host of family and friends.
