Kenneth Landon “Chigger” McCrary, age 88, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama. A beloved father, grandfather, veteran, and friend to many, Kenneth’s life was marked by service, devotion, and a contagious sense of humor that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Born on October 20, 1936, in Scottsboro, Alabama, Kenneth was raised in the close-knit Merrimack Mill community. He attended Joe Bradley schools and developed early on the values of hard work and community that would guide him throughout his life. At the age of 17, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. Stationed in Germany for two years, he proudly served as a Private Second Class and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. His time in the military remained one of his most cherished experiences. His military service with the U.S. Army spanned from October 14, 1955, to February 9, 1962.
Upon returning home to Huntsville, Kenneth worked various jobs before finding his lifelong calling in civil engineering. Over the years, he built a respected career and enduring friendships through his work at Gilbert Engineering, CFW Construction Company, and Smith Engineering. His dedication to his craft and his colleagues left an indelible mark on those around him.
Kenneth met and married the love of his life, Martha Ray McCrary. Their marriage spanned 64 years and was blessed with five children: Jeff McCrary, Kenny McCrary, Benny McCrary (Angie), Scott McCrary, and Kim McCrary Golden (Bobby), as well as several cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and particularly close brother-in-law, Tommy Ray. Together they built a home filled with love and laughter. Kenneth and Martha were lifelong members of Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church and later Heritage Baptist Church, where they found spiritual strength and lasting friendships.
After Martha’s passing twenty years ago, Kenneth continued to be a pillar of strength for his family. He remained a devoted father and grandfather to Zachary McCrary (Sara Parker), Mason McCrary, and Ashley Golden. His sister Linda Wilbanks also shared in the bonds of family that meant so much to him.
Even after retirement, Kenneth’s energy never waned. He had a passion for buying, fixing up, and selling automobiles—a hobby that combined his mechanical skill with his generous spirit. Always ready to lend a helping hand, he was known for his kindness toward others and his unwavering commitment to doing good.
Despite the challenges that came with age and illness in later years, Kenneth never lost the essence of who he was. His unique humor, loving nature, and unmistakable laugh continued to brighten every room he entered. He was truly one of a kind—an inspiration through both word and deed.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home & Memory Gardens, located at 698 Winchester Rd NE in Huntsville. A Celebration of Life will follow on Monday, April 28 at 1:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services with military honors will take place immediately afterward at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Kenneth “Chig” McCrary leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though his light has dimmed here on earth, it shines brightly in the hearts of those he touched.
