

Lawrence Runyan Seggel, 86, of Hazel Green, AL passed on December 3, 2021. Larry was born in Nutley, NJ on December 19, 1934. He graduated from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania obtaining a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1957. He and his wife, Susan Elizabeth Sherrill, then moved to Huntsville where he was assigned as a 2nd Lt. to the Ordinance Missile Lab at Redstone Arsenal.
Larry had an exceptional career at Redstone receiving many prestigious awards including the Saint Barbara Medal for Artillerymen. When his military commission ended in 1960 he became a civilian engineer, where he quickly moved up the ranks, becoming the youngest Deputy Project Manager of a major international weapons system, the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), the first such system to be developed and deployed on time, under cost and meeting all of its technical requirements. He loved his job!
Larry was an extraordinary athlete, excelling in many sports, but baseball was his passion and he played all the way through college. That passion lead him into coaching, where he touched many a young man’s life in Huntsville. He coached for 20+ years, all the way from Little League to Senior Babe Ruth. He even had a State Champion Junior Babe Ruth team! Larry was also an avid model train enthusiast, building engines from scratch, and then creating a garden railroad that was featured in the Huntsville Botanical Gardens “A Tour of Town and Country Gardens” 2003.
Larry was preceeded in death by his parents Mary Lucinda Bartow and Ludwig Lawrence Seggel, his brothers, Richard Alan Seggel and Norman Bartow Seggel. He is survived by his wife Sue (married 66+ years), son Bradford (Susan), daughters Kimberly Dahlmann (Ray), and Alison Pressley (Ken), 3 grandchildren, Brett (Emily), Kyle, and Sherrill Dahlmann, great grandson Thomas Dahlmann, sister Mary Lou Mann and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you make a donation in his name, to your favorite charity. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
