Leonard Washington Bynum Jr.
February 23, 1930 – June 24, 2020
Leonard Washington Bynum Jr. (Luke), age 90, passed away on June 24, 2020 at his home with his family by his side.
Luke was born on February 23, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He spent his childhood alternating between Chicago and Gleason, Tennessee where he graduated from Gleason High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1949 and served until 1954. He then enrolled at the University of Tennessee, graduating with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1959. Luke worked for TVA his entire career, retiring in 1991.
Luke was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He spent much of his personal time coaching his sons’ numerous baseball and basketball teams to encourage their love of sports. After retirement, his passions were travel, watching the UT Vols, and playing golf. He especially enjoyed playing early morning rounds with his friends at Redstone Arsenal.
Luke is survived by his sons: David Bynum and wife Cheryl, and Daniel Bynum and wife Joann. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Leslye, McKenna, Kipp, Elliott, Alex and Jake, and 5 great-grandchildren. Luke was predeceased by his wife, Stacia Bynum, nee Patulski, his parents, Leonard Bynum Sr. and Sally Bynum, nee Poynter, and his brother, Ronald Bynum.
Graveside Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Valhalla Memory Gardens, Huntsville, AL 35811
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Julie Babin whose guidance and assistance allowed Luke to receive excellent care.
