Liselotte Martin

She was born August 30, 1926 in Mohrungen, Germany. She grew up in Germany as the youngest of 3 siblings. Following WWII, she became a refugee and found work with the Red Cross where she met her future husband, Roland Martin, who was serving in the US Army. They married in November 1949. She loved being the wife of an Army soldier and was often heard to say “I love the military!”. Her life as an Army wife took her to Raleigh, NC, where she became a US citizen; Japan; Fort Gordon (Augusta), Georgia; back to Germany; Redstone Arsenal (Huntsville), Alabama, back to Germany; Fort Stewart (Hinesville), Georgia, and ultimately back to Huntsville, which became her beloved hometown. She enjoyed cooking and baking, working in the home garden, keeping an immaculately clean house, entertaining her wealth of friends, loving her children and grandchildren (both biological and extended) and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the “Alpine Singers”, an all-volunteer German folk band. She volunteered to visit and entertain nursing home residents for over 40 years. She loved serving others; no one ever left her house without some sort of treat or snack in hand.

She is preceded in death by daughter Christine Martin Pruitt and husband Roland Martin. She is survived by son Michael Martin (Lisa) of Matthews, NC, son-in-law Chris Pruitt (Pam) of Gardendale, AL, granddaughter Nicole Savago (Joey) of Cary, NC, granddaughter Brianna Martin of Fort Mill, SC, and great-grandchildren Riley Christine and Caleb Joseph Savago of Cary, NC.

A memorial service will be held at Valhalla Funeral Home in Huntsville, AL on August 15, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am followed by the service beginning at 11:00 am.

“Oma Lilo’s” life is a remarkable story of perseverance, discipline, and caring for and serving others. May the memories she leaves behind inspire us to live with similar qualities.
