Mr. Lonnie Johnson Brooks died July 29, 2021 at his home in Huntsville, Alabama. Lonnie was born on May 10, 1930 in Bowman, Georgia to Alonzo and Louvenia Brooks. After his mother’s passing, Alonzo married Maude G. Smith, and they raised Lonnie in Pendleton, South Carolina. After High School, he joined the United States Navy, and served as a Sonar Specialist on the U.S.S. Gurke (DD783) in the Korean War, where he participated in the Marine landing at Inchon. Lonnie married Alice Marie Brooks (nee Grisham) in 1953, and enjoyed a wonderfully happy and loving marriage with her for 56 years until her passing in 2009.
After using the GI Bill to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in 1957 from Clemson University in Electrical Engineering, he participated in some of the earliest stages of America’s “Space Race” to the moon. After that he went on to work on projects such as the International Space Station and Shuttle missions.
Lonnie had an amazing sense of humor that was enjoyed by many friends, neighbors and work mates, along with his family throughout his lifetime. He lived to serve his God and Savior Jesus Christ, first and foremost, and made sure to pass these values on to his family. He is preceded in eternity by his Father Alonzo, Mother Louvenia, Step Mother Maude, and his brother Lloyd Brooks. He is survived by his sister Doris Ruth Moore Brooks, his three Children, Lt. Colonel Lonnie Dean Brooks, Cynthia Marie Crawford, and Rebecca Lynn Boley and his Grandchildren Cameron Michael Boley, and Clarissa Rae Brooks. He will be terribly missed.
Graveside services are being provided by Valhalla Funeral Home on Winchester Road, Huntsville, Alabama on Tuesday August 3, 2021 at 10:00 AM, with his son, Pastor L. Dean Brooks officiating.
