Dr. Lucius Kennedy “Ken” Montgomery, Jr., 83, of Huntsville, AL passed away on September 21, 2022, surrounded by his loving children. Ken was born in Columbia, South Carolina on September 27, 1938. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Muriel Catherine Montgomery and his parents, Mattie Shaw and Lucius Kennedy “Buddy” Montgomery.
Left to cherish his memory is his son Erik Montgomery of Gulf Shores, AL and his daughters Lori Horton of Greenville, SC, and Patti Montgomery of Meridianville, AL; six wonderful grandchildren; one great grandson; and many cousins who loved him like a brother.
Ken grew up in the small town of Kingstree, SC, and held dear to his heart this community of family and friends. Ken was a graduate of Clemson University, earning a BS in Applied Mathematics. He remained faithful to his Tigers for life. He received his Masters in Mathematics and Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California, during which time he met his beloved wife.
After graduating, Ken joined the US Army Missile Command and was assigned to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. He left the military with the rank of Captain and began a lifelong career in the Defense Industry. Ken worked for Teledyne Brown Engineering, where he was a key contributor in the Ballistic Missile Defense program. He concluded his long career in engineering and technology at Dynetics. After retirement, Ken supported his wife’s business Sew Sassy Fabrics by creating custom software and the customer website.
Ken was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. He loved playing strategic games with his family and friends and enjoyed playing duplicate bridge where he earned the honor of Life Master. He had a wide variety of interests, from football to theater to programming, however spending time with his family, especially at their home on the Elk River, was always a favorite. Ken was an active member of University Baptist Church, where he enjoyed services and his Sunday school class. Ken never met a stranger, always had a smile on his face, and was known to all as a generous, loving, gentle, and kind-hearted man.
You may visit with the family at Valhalla Funeral Home on Saturday, September 24, 2022, from 1:30-3:00 PM. Funeral services will commence in Valhalla’s chapel at 3PM. Interment will immediately follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to the American Heart Association.
