Born in Tennessee, Anne spent most of her life in Huntsville, Alabama. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and faithful member of Chase Park Church of Christ.
Anne taught third grade at Madison Academy for 25 years. Later in her career, she reflected on her childhood in a one-room Tennessee schoolhouse and wrote a letter to her students. In it, she reminded them:
“There is a lot for you to be thankful for. You are far better equipped to cope with this modern world.”
That perspective guided her throughout her life. Anne believed there was always something to be thankful for, no matter the circumstances.
Among her belongings, her family found a lifetime of handwritten letters, notes, and cards. She never needed a special occasion to reach out. Whether for a birthday, anniversary, word of encouragement, or simply to remind someone they were loved, Anne was quick to send a note. She thought of others often and made sure they knew it.
She shared more than 60 years of marriage with her beloved husband, John. Together they traveled, raised their family, and built a life rooted in faith. A devoted member of Chase Park Church of Christ, Anne made her faith the foundation of her life. She was a proud mother to her sons, Jeff and Greg, and a loving grandmother to Maryanne, who knew her simply as “Memama.”
One of Anne’s greatest joys in recent years was becoming a great-grandmother. She loved watching Anne Harland and Betty Rose grow and treasured every chance she had to be with them.
The message she shared with her students all those years ago was one she lived herself. Anne never lost sight of how much she had to be thankful for.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband, John Fults; her parents, Ima Jewel and Andy Simmons; her sister, Gayle Williams; and her brother, Sonny Simmons.
She is survived by her sister, Linda Keen; her sons, Jeff Fults and Greg Fults (Nicole); her granddaughter, Maryanne Floyd (Ben); her great-granddaughters, Anne Harland Floyd and Betty Rose Floyd; and many beloved nieces, nephews, friends, and members of her church family.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 9, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road NE in Huntsville, with the funeral service immediately following at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Madison Academy in Anne’s honor. Or perhaps, in her memory, write the letter you’ve been meaning to write. Check on a friend. Love your neighbor. Be thankful for what you have. Anne spent a lifetime doing exactly that.
