Mr. Nathan Showers, 97 years young, took his last breath in this world in the early hours of Saturday morning, April 10th. He passed after a brief stay at Huntsville Hospital; he was surrounded by his loving family. His strong character and gumption had helped him live independently all these 97 years. Praise God!
Nathan was born in Massillon, OH in 1923. He was the son of Viola Brittain Showers and Charles Woodward Showers. Nathan was the youngest of five sons. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Ellwood B, Howard, Spencer B (Whitey), Russell F. He started school at the University of Cincinnati; when Pearl Harbor was bombed, he joined the Navy and was commissioned as a Lieutenant JG. He was stationed in California maintaining aircraft. After the war he returned and graduated from the University of Cincinnati as an aerospace engineer.
He moved to Dayton Ohio, and worked at the Wright Patterson Airfield, where he was involved in the development of High-Speed Propellers for fighter aircrafts for the Air Force. He met Helen Marjoie Taylor in a bowling league and married her in 1951; they were married 57 years. Moving to Huntsville with son Jeff in 1957, and Shirley, their daughter, was born just a few short years later. It was the beginning of the boom for the space race in Huntsville. Nate worked on projects such as the Saturn Launch Platform and Skylab, to only name two.
Nathan was a gentleman, a scholar, a Mason, a very active member of the Optimist Club; but even more important he was a Dad, Uncle, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, friend and Coach. He is survived by his Son Jeff (Lesley), and daughter Shirley, Grandchildren: Phillip (Ashley), Nathan (Patricia), Lorren (David), Dylan (Kristen), Samantha (Kerry), and Evan (fiance Holly); Great grandchildren: Benjamin, Ella, Bethany, John Luke, Brantley, and one on the way.
He loved his mountain community and was a founding member of The Monte Sano United Methodist Church and served on nearly every committee or board. It was surely, his Beulah Land!
Nathan Showers was such a blessing to us all; “Go rest high on that mountain. Son, your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a-shoutin’. Love for the Father and Love the Son”(Vince Gill).
A service to celebrate his life will take place at The Monte Sano United Methodist Church on April 17, 2021 at 11am. The family will be receiving friends and guests at 10am. Covid precautions will be followed. Burial will follow the service at Valhalla Cemetery in Huntsville.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Nathan Showers name to The Monte Sano Methodist Church, The Humane Society or the United Methodist Children's Home.
