

Peggy Mitchell Ortell, age 88, was surrounded by family when she went to be with the Lord on June 14, 2025 in Huntsville, Alabama.
Peg was born on October 11, 1936, to the late Clyde and Madeline Mitchell in Madison County, Alabama. She was the second of three siblings; she was predeceased by her brothers Jimmy Mitchell and Jerry Mitchell.
She lived her life in Toney and Huntsville, Alabama, where she met and then married the love of her life, Alex Ortell, in June of 1972.
She was a devoted mother to her two daughters, Gia and Nori, and then later her four grandchildren. She delighted in her six great grandchildren.
Peg was a committed volunteer at Faith Chapel, where she used her skills from business college to organize the ladies that worked at the front desk. Faith was a primary focus in her life, and she was a long time supporter of missions in Kenya and many other ministries.
Peg is survived by her two daughters, Gia Richison Downs (David) and Nori Neal Krout (Bob); her four grandchildren Joshua Downs (Stefanie), Alicia Downs Vandergriff (Keith), Shelbie Neal McCord (Dustin), and Zachary Neal (Kayleigh); and six great grandchildren, Piper, Logan, Luke, Cooper, Afton, and Jesse. She will also be deeply missed by her honorary sister, Carol Johnston (Jerry) and honorary grandson Jason Johnston (Nicole). She will be forever remembered by her sister-in-law Rosie Mitchell, her nieces Jimi Dawn and Jana, and many cousins and dear friends.
The family would also like to express deep gratitude to her caregivers, Melody, Sabrina, and Shelbie.
A private celebration of life was held on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Valhalla Funeral Home and Memory Gardens.
