Roy was raised in Livonia, MI, the only child of Muriel Franz Gowman and Roy Folger Gowman.
The son of a pharmacist, Roy began working at the Gowman Pharmacy at the age of twelve, eventually becoming a "soda jerk”, and also discovering a love for commercial art. He graduated from Livonia/ Bentley High School in 1955. He attended Eastern Michigan University, playing saxophone in the band, and receiving a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. He then married Maxine Sweet of Adrian, MI and they moved to Monroe, MI in 1966. There he taught instrumental music to fourth through sixth graders in several elementary schools in the Monroe County School System until retiring in 1994. The couple attended Trinity Episcopal Church, where Roy was a Lay Worship Leader, Eucharist Minister and Eucharist Visitor. They were also members of The Monroe Chamber Singers. During this time, Roy continued his education, earning a Masters of Music in Music Education from the University of Michigan, and attending the Whitaker Institute of Theology at the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. Roy also took an interest in the Masons, joining in the mid-'90s. In 2008, Roy moved to Huntsville, AL to be close to daughter Janice and her family, remaining there until his death.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Muriel Gowman, and by son-in-law William A. "Bill" Kern.
Roy is survived by his two children, daughter Janice E. Kern of Huntsville, AL, and son Mark A. (Liz) Gowman of Victor, NY, as well as ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his legally-separated wife, Maxine L. Gowman of Monroe.
Due to Covid concerns, family has chosen only a small graveside service.
