

Born on January 25, 1928, in Latta, South Carolina, Rubie graduated second in her class from Latta High School in 1946. She went on to attend Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Business after two years of study.
In Charleston, South Carolina, During the Late 1940’s Rubie was crowned “Miss Naval Hospital” and “Azalea Queen,” titles that reflected not only her outward beauty but also her charming personality. After dating the love of her life, Henry Bascom Floyd III, for six years, the couple married in 1948 and shared a remarkable 60 years together before his passing in 2008. They lived in South Carolina, Virginia, Florida, and North Carolina before settling in Huntsville, AL, where they lived for 45 years until Bascom’s death.
Rubie’s life was rich with love and devotion to her family. She is survived by her four children: Rebecca Gaskin, Henry Bascom “Chip” Floyd IV, Jennie Floyd, and Tina Smith; six grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. Her family fondly remembers her as a funny and wonderful woman who brought joy to every gathering. She had a zany sense of humor and deep wisdom, a rare combination.
A woman of many talents, Rubie had a lifelong love for music; she sang and was an accomplished pianist and organist. She also had a talent for cooking and gardening and loved to travel. She visited 28 states with her family during her lifetime. Her curiosity about the world was matched by her dedication to community involvement, and for many years, she was active in both her children’s schools and her church.
Rubie’s legacy is one of laughter, love, beauty and resilience. Those who knew her will remember not only the sparkle in her eyes but also the warmth of her heart. May memories of Rubie May Floyd bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to share in her extraordinary life.
A graveside service will be held on May 1, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, AL, to celebrate Rubie’s remarkable life. Donations may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital if you wish to make a contribution in Rubie’s memory.
