Shirley Tait King

Shirley received her elementary and high school education in Mobile, AL. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Alabama A&M University where she met and married her husband, the late Stanford J. King, Sr. From this union two loving sons were born. She received a Master’s degree in 1970 and a Doctorate of Education in 1983, both from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Shirley started her teaching career in 1966 in Brewton, AL. Afterwards, she taught at the University of Alabama while working on her Master’s degree. Shirley was employed by the Mobile Board of School Commissioners and taught junior high special class for mentally handicapped students. She moved to

Evansville, IN, taught in the public schools and served as a middle school principal until retiring from the system.

Shirley was a devout Christian and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her Christian activities, she was a former member of Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and was currently a member of the Central North Alabama Alumnae Chapter. She was a member of Mended Hearts 260.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory two loving and devoted sons, Stanford (Fresheda) King, Jr. and Brian King; four grandchildren: Sakia, Sydney, Simeon, and Savion; two brothers, Brooksie (Louise) Tait and Richard (Marvia) Tait; a devoted niece, Santita (Sylvester) Dioh; sisters-in-law; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
