Born in Ellisville, Mississippi, in 1941 to Garvin Columbus Turner and Lucy Juan (Grantham) Turner, Tom lived a full and vibrant life that took him from his Mississippi roots to homes in Coffeeville, MS; Waynesboro, TN; Selma, AL; and finally Huntsville, AL. Everywhere he went, he left behind stories, laughter, and a legacy of love.
Tom proudly served his country as a mechanic in the Air National Guard before graduating from Mississippi State University in 1964 with a degree in forestry. He spent his career dedicated to the outdoors he loved so much, working for the Mississippi Forestry Commission, Champion International, and Giles & Kendall.
A true outdoorsman and nature lover, Tom found joy in fishing, kayaking, gardening, and simply being outside. He was also a gifted storyteller, genealogist, tinkerer, and craftsman. Whether he was flying kites with grandkids, fixing something in the garage, or capturing a photo of a "big fish," he was always finding ways to make memories and bring people together. He had a gentle spirit, a keen sense of humor, and an unmatched generosity.
He was deeply involved in his community and church, often volunteering for mission projects and supporting others in countless quiet ways. He especially loved attending his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, band concerts, and milestones—always the biggest cheerleader in the crowd.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife of many years, Ann (James) Turner, and his three sons: Steve Turner (Tina) of Athens, AL; Bruce Turner (Claire Moore) of Austin, TX; and Scott Turner (Jen) of Huntsville, AL. He was a proud grandfather to Bridgett Brown (Shannon), Ashlyn Miotke (John), Matthew Williamson (Errin), Lucas Turner, Eric Bilbrey, and Kevin Bilbrey; and a joyful great-grandfather to Jackson, Cooper, Emery, Bennett, Ashlyn, Adaleigh, Mattie, and Eliza. He is also survived by his sister, Edith West, and a host of extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Tom lived a life rich in love, service, and adventure. He leaves behind not only a strong family legacy but also a reminder to live simply, love deeply, laugh often, and never pass up an opportunity to cast a line or tell a good story.
Tom's life will be honored with a service in his memory on Tuesday, July 1st, 2025 at Holmes Street United Methodist Church (501 Holmes Ave NE, Huntsville, AL 35801) with a visitation from 12:30 PM-2:00 PM and a memorial service at 2PM.
