On the morning of October 9, 2026, Wanda Yvonne Dean Brazell went to be with her beloved husband and son in Heaven. She was wearing her pearls and surrounded by family—a fitting farewell for a woman whose life was defined by love, family, faith, and an unmistakable sense of style.
Born on July 13, 1941, Wanda built a life centered around the people she loved most. The love of her life was her husband, Alton Virgil Brazell, and their love story began many years ago. Family lore has it that when they were teenagers, Alton once walked all the way from Hazel Green to the Ryland Pike area just to see her. Whether every detail of that story has survived the years exactly as it happened or not, it seems fitting for a love that would become such an important part of both of their lives.
Family meant everything to her. She was immensely proud of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Some of her happiest moments were the weekends when her grandchildren came to visit. She had a wonderful way of making those visits feel special. She would find out which television shows her grandchildren loved and make sure they were recorded on VHS during the week so they could watch them together, over and over again, when they came to visit. Holidays, from Easter to Christmas, were always celebrated at “Granny and Pawpaw’s” home. Her children and grandchildren also share fond memories of the beloved “Popcorn Bowl,” one of those simple family traditions that became part of the fabric of growing up and being together at her home. That bowl has since been passed down to be shared with her great-grandchildren, along with buttery, homemade popcorn and memories of Granny and Pawpaw.
She took great pride in everything she did. Her house was always immaculate, and so was she. She loved clothes, shopping, and jewelry and was always impeccably dressed. She rarely left the house without being fully made up and looking her best. Her elegance and attention to detail were simply part of who she was. She was also remarkably active. For many years, it was difficult to picture her walking around without her ankle weights. Staying busy and active seemed to come naturally to her and became another familiar part of the woman her family knew and loved. She enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including a Big Spring Cafe chili dog and the occasional meal from Captain D’s, complete with fish, fries, and hushpuppies. At home, she loved watching old Westerns and HGTV, whether following a familiar cowboy across the screen or seeing what home might be transformed next.
Her faith was a constant throughout her life. She was a faithful member of West Huntsville Church of Christ. Her devotion to her faith, her home, and especially her family helped define the life she lived.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Thelma Dean; her brothers, Lindsey Dean, Glenn Dean, Paul Dean, Kenneth Dean, and Stanley Dean; her husband, Alton Virgil Brazell; and her son, Byron Keith Brazell.
She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Dean Atnip; her daughters, Allie Yvonda Ann Best and Carolyn Regina Kennington (Russell); her grandchildren, Tasha Roberts Wiley (Michael), Stephen Keith Roberts (Carey), Tiffany Brazell Lane (Matt), Charles Joseph Best (Storm), Michael Justin Best, Katie Lynn Moody (Brandon), and Ian Russell Kennington; her great-grandchildren, Addison, Samantha, Sarah, Carly, Kendra, Kennedy, Wylder, Tucker, and Walt; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Above all, she will be remembered for the extraordinary love she had for her family and the pride she took in every generation that followed her. She created a home her family wanted to return to—a place filled with familiar traditions, cherished memories, and the certainty that they were deeply loved. Her family will remember her faith, her elegance, her strength, her devotion to Alton, and the countless small ways she made the people she loved feel cared for. Those memories will live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, a lasting legacy of a life centered on family and love.
The family will receive visitors at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road NE, Huntsville AL 35811, on October 16, 2026, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, with a Celebration of Life at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Wanda’s name to West Huntsville Church of Christ, 1519 Old Monrovia Rd, Huntsville, AL 35806.
