Andrea L Martin
July 17, 1951 – August 9, 2019
It is with great sadness the family of Andrea “Andy” Martin announces that she passed away the morning of August 9th, 2019 at the age of 68. Andrea was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1951. She graduated from North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, attended Purdue and Butler University. Andy was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Andrea’s love for animals began at a young age and continued through her work as a registrar for The Indianapolis Zoo and The Houston Zoo as well as volunteering for the Agape Horse Therapy. She was a leader in membership for the Zoo Registrars Association, a Board member for NAVVF and Zionsville Historical Society. There was not a living creature Andrea didn’t show kindness to. She had a big heart and passion for advocating for those in need. Even the cats in her neighborhood knew of her unwavering, caring soul and would often visit her and sometimes ended up making a home there with her. Her family will miss her signature laugh, Calligraphy written cards, kindness, love for animals, and ability to treasure the antiques of the world. Andrea will be lovingly remembered by her family, Mickey (Sister), Mark (brother-in-law) Speelman, William Martin (brother), Patty (sister), Doug (brother in-law) Brown, many cousins, nieces, nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. Andrea was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Glenna Martin. Andy will be buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN with her parents. A private memorial service will be held at a future date. In memory of Andrea’s love for animals her family asks in lieu of flowers to make a donation to Lori Marker’s Cheetah Conservation Fund, The Indianapolis Zoo or your local Zoo. www.cheetah.org www.indianapoliszoo.com/support-the-zoo
- Private Services will be held at a later date

Julian and I have often thought of Andrea over the years & hope her life was kind to her after we lost touch. We have great memories of her smile, her giggle, her amazing calligraphy (how did she do that?) and her sweet disposition. In 1995, after Julian left the Indianapolis Zoo, we moved to Encinitas, CA where he became CEO of the San Diego Botanic Garden (formerly Quail). In 1995, to help us out, Andrea and her friend Brenda agreed to drive my little Honda Prelude out here (stopping to see friends along the way) for a little vacation and then we flew them home. Andrea was one of the 1st to visit us in our new home on the Garden grounds and we had lots of fun exploring the area (including Balboa Park, the SD Zoo, Wild Animal Park, and the BellyUp Tavern) and playing with our cats Oscar and Tony (who Andrea had known since they were kittens). She was an important person in our lives, a member of our "family of choice". We send our love to her and her other friends and family members.

I am saddened by the news of Andrea's passing. She was a member of an elite group of people who work in zoos and aquariums known as Registrars. She contributed to the development of our professional organization and dedicated her career to data collection of zoo animals. She will be missed and I will keep her family and friends in my prayers. RIP Andrea see you at the zoo in the sky

Such a gentle soul. Fond memories of Bill and Andy picking me up for the late Christmas Eve service at church. I will always remember her smile. Rest easy, Andrea.

So sorry to learn of the loss of Andrea. She was terrific. My husband (Darryl Holder) and I often spoke of the "play-dates" she arranged for the animals. (Our bunny wanted one!) I've missed many NAVVF get-togethers in recent years but we plan the Niagara Falls trip. Hope to see some of you there. =Best wishes, Nancy G in AL
