Obituary of Anne N. Pearson
Anne Nottingham Pearson, 103, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2021 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Anne was born in Culpepper, Virginia on September 3, 1917 to Severn Marcellus Nottingham and Jaquelin Ware Nottingham. Her brother, Severn Marcellus Nottingham, Jr., was killed in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. The family lived in Orange, Virginia. Anne attended school at Stewart Hall in Staunton, Va. and Harcum Junior College in Bryn Mawr, PA. Anne served in the Red Cross during World War II. During that time, she met and married John Shoemaker Pearson, Jr. (1914-1981) and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana with him. John was a widower with two young daughters, Pamela (1937-1984) and Georgia. Together, John and Anne had two children, Jaquelin Nottingham and John Shoemaker, III. Anne is survived by Georgia Sue Pearson of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; Jaquelin Pearson (Dennis Codlin) of San Diego, CA; and John S. Pearson III (Jennifer) of Indianapolis, IN; nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Anne also enjoyed a long companionship with Robert Girk (1914-2014), enjoying many travels and happy times together. Anne was very engaged in the community in a myriad of ways. She was an ardent volunteer, working with various agencies throughout her life in Indianapolis. She loved her years of work with abused women and children at the Family Support Center of Indianapolis and was once awarded Volunteer of the Year. Her personal interests included a great love for gardening around her beloved home, tennis, exercise, walking and avid reading. John and Anne were also longtime members of Woodstock Club. She was a member of the Junior League, The Colonial Dames of America and the Progressive Club of Indianapolis. Anne was also a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Indianapolis. She served on many committees, including the Library Committee, the Feeding Ministry and the Altar Guild. This work continued throughout her life, well into her 90’s. She always considered Trinity her spiritual community and got great joy from her time there and the many friends that spanned her lifetime. During the last decade of her life, Anne enjoyed the activities and many old and new friends at Marquette Manor in Indianapolis. Anne’s family would like to particularly acknowledge her aide, Susann Sams, for her gentle care that developed into a deep friendship. Anne was one of those women who took care of those less fortunate. She had a heart of gold and could not turn away someone in need. She loved to support others and found many ways to be of service in her everyday life and in her community. She was a compassionate, giving and loving soul. She will be deeply missed but her acts of love and kindness will live on. A memorial service for Anne will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3243 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN., on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at 2:30 PM.
