She attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio before transferring to Indiana State University in Terre Haute, where she met the love of her life, Larry. She graduated in 1967 and, following graduation, began working for the ISU Information Technology Department.
On August 26, 1967, Carolyn married Larry Mayer. The couple lived in Indianapolis, Chicago, and Detroit before settling in Carmel, where they made their home. Carolyn was a devoted wife and mother to their children, Larry (1968) and Christine (1973). She spent many years as a stay-at-home mother and volunteered at their elementary school until Christine was in the ninth grade.
Carolyn later returned to work at Clay Junior High School in the information technology department, where she helped integrate computers into the school. She retired from Carmel Clay Schools on October 5, 2020.
Carolyn loved spending time with her family, especially annual summer trips to Myrtle Beach with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and fall visits to Folly Beach with her husband. She was very creative and took great pride in her crafting, including creating all of the flowers for her daughter’s wedding and a beautiful floral arch for her son’s beach wedding.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Mayer; her children, Larry (Lori) Mayer of Indianapolis and Christine Woodward of Carmel; her grandchildren, Ashley (Danny) Hildebrandt, Isabelle Woodward, and Owen Woodward; her great-grandchildren, Isaac and Noah Alas, and Daniel and Brody Hildebrandt; her sister, Barbara Harris of New York; and her brother-in-law, Jerry(Diane) Mayer of Indianapolis.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Carmel Lions Club at a later date.
