When I first met Dan my car had broken down and he was the first one there to help get it back started. Ever since that night we grew such a big friendship. He was always someone who could make me smile, and bring laughter to times when I needed it the most. I remember his love for old school music and how much he loved his two dogs. Thank you Dan for everything. I cannot wait to see you again

I am so incredibly sad and sorry for all of those who knew and loved Dan. He was an amazingly funny, bright and passionate man. I loved sharing musical interests with him and learning about his life in the brief time that I spent with him. He had a huge love for his family and for the issues not only in his community, but in the world.. he was a true gem. He will surely be missed and may he Rest In Peace.

To know Dan was to love Dan, plain and simple. My heart is shattered just thinking of his endearing smile. Dan was one of those rare politicians where you could tell the drive and motivation was genuine from the moment you met him. It's a tough and painful world out there, which can hurt so much when you shine so bright, and Dan was one of those bright shining stars. I feel so incredibly lucky that I got to know him as closely as I did. We met through a mutual friend when I was an intern for a lobbyist and he was a freshmen legislator and remained close friends. I'll never ever forget the day I sat across from him at a coffee shop, pitching an idea to him, and he said he thought I would be Indiana's first female governor. And I remember saying, if that's true, it'll be because I'll rise on your campaign when you get there first. There are just no words to describe the tragedy that is losing Dan too soon. His legacy will truly live on. He impacted, inspired, and lifted up so many. And his spirit and memory will continue to do the same. Rest easy my friend. I loved you so much. To his family, and especially his mother, who has suffered loss I can't even imagine--my heart and prayers are with you, for whatever that is worth in a time of such despair.

Dan was one awesome person, and I believe his spirit will live on helping those who suffer from mental health and addiction issues. I met Dan at a recovery center when we were both going through a really tough time, I remember him Inspiring hope into others that needed it as much as we both did… seemingly effortlessly he would share his strength, inspiration, and hope with our fellow brothers in recovery. Dan was a very humble person, and I will always remember him while I carry the message of recovery standing up, while a great brother of mine unfortunately lays down.
