October 1, 1957 – May 29, 2025
Our beloved sister and aunt, Deborah Diane Gray, 67, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29th, at Indiana University North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana. She was born on October 1, 1957, in Clarksville, Indiana.
Deb was a kind and gentle soul who loved life and deeply cherished her family and friends. Though not of the Catholic faith, she dedicated much of her professional life to the Archdiocese of Louisville, where she served faithfully from 1993 to 2021.
She began her career in the Finance Department of the Chancery, where she was responsible for accounts payable and employee flexible benefit claims. In 2005, Deb transitioned to Catholic Cemeteries and held a variety of roles at Calvary Cemetery. She retired in 2021, but remained closely connected to her colleagues, whom she considered extended family. Our family offers heartfelt gratitude to the Archdiocese of Louisville for the care, friendship, and community they gave Deb. In particular, Marilyn Bennett and Kenny Popp were her best friends and earthly angels.
Deb faced many health challenges with unshakable faith, strength, and determination. Her resilience, determination and grace were an inspiration to all who knew her. We are forever grateful to Dr. Vijay Raghavan (Brown Cancer Center, Louisville) and Dr. Rafat Abonour (Simon Cancer Center, Indianapolis) for their compassionate care and support. Because of them, Deb was given the gift of more time on this earth to share her love, laughter and inspiration. She left this world on her terms — a gift beyond measure.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Eva June and Robert W. Gray; her sister, Carol “Susie” Tungate; her brother, Robert W. Gray; and her baby brother, Jeffrey L. Gray. She is survived by her sister and best friend, Robin A. Gray; her sister-in-law, Celeste Gray (California); niece Kelli Tungate (Michelle Perry); nephew Christopher A. Tungate (Nikki Yates); niece Shannon Hamzeh (Hooman); and several great-nieces and nephews. Near and dear to her heart was her beloved cat, Chloe Michelle.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 19th at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Carmelite’s Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Indiana University Multiple Myeloma Foundation (Miles for Myeloma) in honor of Dr. Raghavan, Dr. Abonour and Chelse
