As a motorcycle enthusiast and Mopar fan, Don was always eager to go for rides on his cruiser and install new accessories on his Chrysler. He used his enthusiasm for motorized vehicles to fundraise for Riley Children’s Hospital; Don was an annual participant in the Riley Children’s Foundation ‘Miracle Ride’ and the most visible accessory on Don’s Chrysler was a Riley Children’s Foundation license plate.
Don was a remarkably compassionate person. In addition to supporting the Riley Children’s Foundation, Don was known to help strangers – be it by buying gas for a veteran who was down on his luck, or helping a woman on a plane who was struggling with motion sickness. And his compassion extended beyond humans; Don rescued Abigail Marie Hankla – or just Abby for short – from an abusive home and made a point of giving the energetic Jack Russell Terrier the life she deserved.
Don was a devoted husband who loved and supported his wife and family. Don left behind his wife, Karen Hart, Sisters, Carol Hoyt, Nancy Mosschetti, and Peggy Kangas. Sister Linda Lerner preceded him in death. Brothers Lee Hankla, Freddy Hankla, and Jerry Hankla preceded him in death.
