Don graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and took his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He went on to become a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and worked at the Indianapolis Industrial Clinic and later at Orthopaedics Indianapolis (Ortho Indy). He was on the Orthopaedic Staff at Methodist Hospital until his retirement in 1996.
Don was known for his paintings. He studied landscape painting under George Cherapov of Vermont. He later participated in many exhibitions throughout Indiana. His paintings were illustrated in the book "Painting Indiana" published in 2000.
Don was an avid golfer for many years and enjoyed playing various courses around Indianapolis with his friend John.
Don married Irene Sweeney on July 3, 1969. He is survived by wife, Irene and their three sons, Kevin (Jen) Russell of Paulding, OH, Kurt Russell of Indianapolis and Kraig Russell, MD of Portland, OR and granddaughter, Kaitln of Kokomo, IN. Other adult sons include Donald Russell II, John Russell and Edward Russell all of Indianapolis. He is preceded in death by son, Mark; brothers, William and Jerry; and sister Janet.
He will be missed by many, including Jackson, his Golden Retiever.
