James P. Fairfield was born in Allegan, MI, on February 8, 1928 to Ruby and Guy Fairfield. He was a Rector Scholar at DePauw University and began his 40-year career at the Indianapolis Life Insurance Co. in 1949. He was an actuary and prepared the company’s taxes for many years. He was especially pleased that auditors never found an error while that area was his responsibility. He retired from Indianapolis Life in 1989 as 2nd vice-president in charge of Human Resources. He was a faithful, participating member of the First Baptist Church of Indianapolis for 67 years, serving in many capacities. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Martha, daughters Cathy Fairfield (Mike Ideran), Nancy Fairfield (Paul Vanderwal), Susan Fairfield (Terry Yoder), 7 grandchildren, Jennifer Merwald, Elizabeth Merwald, Joanna Martin, Nikki Ellis, Sam Folley, Megan Nolan, Rebecca Folley, and 14 great-grandchildren. Friends and family may gather on Saturday, January 30, 2021 from 12:30pm to 2:30pm in the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Union Chapel Cemetery at 3:00pm.
