

Dr. John J. Loughlin, of Indianapolis, departed this life Monday, February 4, 2019. He was 92 years old. John was born July 14, 1926 in South Bend, IN to the late William H. and Bernadette (Martin) Loughlin.
John had proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He enlisted at the age of 18 and served as a Seabee in Okinawa. John rarely spoke of his service in the military, but in October of 2018 was able to travel to Washington D.C. on an Indy Honor Flight and be recognized for his service.
He earned three degrees from Indiana University between 1956 and 1976. A BS in Business Education – Mathematics in 1956, MS in Secondary Education in 1958 and finally, his EdD in School Administration in 1976.
Dr. Loughlin had also served on the Indiana General Assembly from 1969 – 1970 where he was named Outstanding Democratic Legislator of the Year. He had served as the Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1971-1973.
He was Chief Administrative Officer for Indiana Vocational Technical College as well as Vice-President Provost. He had worked as supervisor of Adult and Continuing Education / Extended School Services for Indianapolis Public Schools and was also a junior high school and high school math teacher.
He was honored by the Council of the Sagamore of the Wabash, an Honorable Kentucky Colonel and received an honorary Doctor of Law from Oakland City College.
Dr. Loughlin was a member of the National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and Rotary International, was a visiting member and reviewer for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and was a member of Phi Kappa Tau social fraternity.
John was a lifelong Indiana University supporter and fan. One of John’s greatest hobbies was watching and attending I.U. basketball and football games. He also enjoyed golf, poker and his supper club friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret B. Loughlin and second wife, Marylou Loughlin; siblings, Marie Waters, James W. Loughlin, Robert Loughlin, Francis M. Loughlin, Margaret Loughlin and Sue Buckenmeyer.
He is survived by his loving children, Peggy (Chris) Boulden-Fields, Neil (Robin) Loughlin, and Carol Loughlin; sisters, Catherine Jones, Theresa Rodriguez and Barbara Martin; grandchildren Tyler Boulden, Riley Boulden, Kevin Loughlin and Scott Loughlin; great grandchild Howard Boulden; and a host of grateful students and colleagues.
There will be private services with final inurnment at Highland Cemetery in South Bend, IN.
