

Karl Peter Henkel, 86, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on August 26, 1939, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Karl lived a life defined by dedication, service, and a passion for the arts, adventure and sports (especially hockey and basketball).
Karl was a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. His academic achievements served as the foundation for a distinguished career in manufacturing with General Motors. Over the course of his professional life, Karl made significant contributions to the industry through his skill and unwavering commitment.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Karl served his country with honor as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force before retiring from military service. His leadership and dedication reflected his deep sense of duty and patriotism.
Outside of his career and military service, Karl embraced a wide range of talents and interests. A gifted musician, he found joy in playing the guitar and piano and shared it generously with those around him. He was an avid sailor who cherished navigating the Great Lakes. Known for his culinary skills, Karl delighted family and friends with his exceptional cooking. He also had a profound appreciation for fine art and was an enthusiastic supporter of symphony and opera performances.
Karl is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis Mann; his son John Henkel (Laura) and his cherished grandchildren Alan, Riley, Mason, and Jordan. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Linda Gauker and Jackie Stearns, as well as his nieces, Vikki Gauker (Paul Pringle), Wendy Caves, and Pam Douglas, and grand-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother John L. Henkel.
Karl’s legacy is one of love for family, dedication to service, and an enduring zest for life’s many pleasures. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
