

LaVonne Mannfeld Bastnagel passed away peacefully with her family at her side May 12, 2025. LaVonne was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 1, 1928 to Robert and LaVonne (Larrison) Mannfeld. She spent her childhood in Indianapolis and attended Howe High School. She then pursued studies at Indiana University in Bloomington. She was accepted and entered Indiana School of Medicine after her third year of university studies. After graduating from medical school, she proceeded to complete a residency in Ophthalmology. She began 67 years of marriage to her husband William as they were both completing their residencies at the medical center. She then began her life work as a wife and mother of four boys.
She was an accomplished artist, and active at the Broad Ripple Art Guild for many years. Her work was displayed at many shows. She was active in many volunteer organizations, among them were Little Sisters of the Poor and the very early ministry of Lucious Newsome. She was a loving and compassionate mother who taught her sons how to love.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William, and her brother, Robert. She is survived by: her four sons, James (Christi), John, Thomas (Judy) and Philip (Vickie); 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 4 great, great grandchildren. The family extends special thanks to her caregivers and staff at Marquette Manor. Their care and compassion were greatly appreciated.
A visitation for Lavonne will be held Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Luke Catholic Church (7575 Holliday Drive East, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM followed by entombment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Society of St. Vincent de Paul in her name will be accepted.
