Lawrence E. "Larry" Mattler

Born in St. Louis to Albert Mattler Jr. and Alberta (Sucher) Mattler, Larry was a graduate of Bishop DuBourg High School and Washington University, both located in St. Louis. He was a protein chemist trained at Washington University Medical School. After serving two years in the military, Larry began his nearly 25-year career at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis. His career focused on the purification and characterization of the proteins of the blood coagulation system. He authored numerous scientific papers both at Washington University and Eli Lilly and Company.

Larry met Carole, his lovely and talented bride (the way he always referred to her) at Lilly, where they shared a lab for 18 years. They would have celebrated 35 years of marriage on September 21.

He was an avid sports fan. In St. Louis, he followed both the baseball and football Cardinals, the Hawks of the NBA, the basketball and soccer teams of St. Louis University, and local high school football and basketball teams. In Indianapolis, he followed the Pacers, Colts, Racers, and Purdue University teams. Though not an accomplished athlete, Larry was an avid golfer and played from in his twenties into his eighties. He golfed in 20 different states in the US and a dozen foreign countries. He was proud of scoring two holes in one and was able to break 100 on the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland. He played in the Lilly Clinic Golf League for over 50 years and was the last of the founding members.

Larry and Carole loved to travel. During their working years they used most of their annual vacation to take one big trip. Planning was a major project leading up to each trip. They traveled extensively in the United States and western Europe, visited Australia and New Zealand, and sailed to most of the islands in the Caribbean. But their favorite place to travel was Tuscany. Their adopted Italian family at IL Borghetto villa near San Gimignano provided a little slice of paradise for the 15 years they were able to visit there. After retirement, he and Carole began to spend their winters in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he enjoyed golf and they greatly enjoyed many music and theatre options.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Albert III, Robert, and Anthony, and sisters Virginia and Irene. He is survived by his loving wife Carole, children Michael Mattler and Susan (John) Carbon, grandchildren Jack and Scarlett Carbon, and Margaret, his first wife and mother of his children.
