CARMEL, INDIANA — L.H. Bayley, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; respected financial industry leader; philanthropist; and man of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital, surrounded by family. He was 90.
For nearly seven decades, L.H. made a lasting impact on Indiana’s financial services industry and philanthropic community. Yet his greatest legacy was found not in titles or honors, but in the lives he touched, relationships he nurtured, and family he cherished.
A Lifetime Built on Kindness and Generosity
Born January 24, 1936, in Southern Illinois, L.H. was the youngest of five children. Growing up in rural Illinois, he learned the value of hard work, compassion, faith, and service.
When a neighboring farmer broke both legs and could not harvest his crops, young L.H., his father, and siblings helped bring in the harvest. The neighbor’s gratitude left a lasting impression, and L.H. often recalled how wonderful it felt to help someone in need. That experience became a guiding principle throughout his life.
A Remarkable Career and a Legacy of Trust
After studying at the University of Illinois from 1954 to 1958 and completing graduate work at Northwestern University, L.H. began his career in 1958 with David A. Noyes & Company in Indianapolis.
He became one of the firm’s most influential leaders and was named Chairman of the Board in 1978. His leadership guided the firm through generations of change, including its transition to Sanctuary Wealth.
As a leader of Bayley Investment Group, L.H. believed financial advising was about more than investments and wealth management. It was about people. He advised generations of families, building relationships grounded in integrity, wisdom, and trust. Clients became friends, and friends became extended family.
His influence extended beyond Indianapolis. He served on the board of NASDAQ and earned widespread recognition for his leadership in the securities industry. In 1990, he was elected to Kappa Beta Phi, the national honorary fraternity of securities industry leaders, and in 1993, he was inducted into the Advisor Hall of Fame.
The New York Stock Exchange twice invited him to participate in its ceremonial bell ringing: in 2003, commemorating his 45 years in the securities industry and David A. Noyes & Company’s 45 years as an Exchange member; and in 2008, celebrating his 50th anniversary with the firm and the company’s centennial.
For L.H., professional success was measured by the trust of his clients, the colleagues he mentored, and the relationships he built.
A Heart for Philanthropy and a Life of Faith
L.H.’s business success was matched by his commitment to philanthropy. A devoted Catholic, he lived his faith through service, generosity, and compassion.
Together with his wife, Dianne, he supported the Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis and the St. Vincent Foundation. Their service earned them the highest volunteer honors from both organizations: the Archdiocese’s Spirit of Service Award in 2001 and St. Vincent’s St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award in 2002.
L.H. served on the Archdiocese’s finance and pastoral councils, was a Trustee and President of the Catholic Community Foundation, and held leadership roles in major fundraising initiatives, including the Legacy of Our Mission: For Our Children and the Future campaign. He and Dianne also co-chaired another multimillion-dollar campaign benefiting the Archdiocese.
His service extended beyond the Church. Organizations benefiting from his time, wisdom, and support included Indiana Wish, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, the American Pianists Association, Women’s Care Center, and Ronald McDonald House.
He was a mentor, advocate, volunteer, and inspirational leader who gave not only his resources but also his heart.
His contributions earned numerous honors, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals Indiana Chapter’s Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year Award in 2001 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. In 1994, Governor Evan Bayh bestowed upon him the Sagamore of the Wabash. In 2001, Governor Frank O’Bannon recognized L.H. and Dianne with the Distinguished Hoosier Award.
Through every honor, L.H. remained guided by the lesson he learned as a boy: helping others is among life’s greatest rewards.
Service to His Country
L.H. proudly served as a Captain in the United States Army. During eight years in the Army Reserves, he received specialized training and held leadership responsibilities in NATO air defense assignments as a mission control officer.
A Love Story Spanning 67 Years
Of all L.H.’s blessings, none was more precious than his wife of 67 years, Dianne.
Their love story began as students at the University of Illinois. L.H. was judging a beauty contest fundraiser, and Dianne was one of the contestants. According to family lore, he deliberately voted in a way that would not draw attention to the beautiful young woman who had caught his eye. It was the only beauty contest in which Dianne finished second.
They married in 1959 and built a life grounded in love, faith, family, friendship, and service.
His Greatest Legacy: Family
Despite his career and philanthropic commitments, L.H.’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband to Dianne; a loving father to twin daughters Kim Fisher and the late Christine Bennett, and son Mike Bayley; and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by Dianne Bayley; daughter Kim Fisher and her husband, Jeff; son Mike Bayley; four grandchildren, Blake Bennett and his wife, Hannah, Kyle Bennett and his wife, Taylor, Jake Fisher and girlfriend Alyssa Castillo, and Abbey Fisher and fiancé Matt Pasanen; and three great-grandchildren, Emmett, Ellah and Eli Bennett.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine Bennett.
His family will forever cherish his wisdom, humor, encouragement, generosity, and steadfast love.
A Life Well Lived. A Legacy That Will Endure.
L.H. Bayley was a trusted advisor, respected businessman, inspirational mentor, dedicated volunteer, generous philanthropist, faithful servant of God, and loving family man.
He understood that wealth could provide security, but kindness could change lives; that leadership was responsibility, not recognition; and that generosity was measured by the spirit in which it was given.
From the young boy helping a neighbor harvest his fields to the distinguished gentleman whose leadership and philanthropy shaped countless lives and institutions, L.H. lived by the same lesson:
The greatest measure of a life is not what we accumulate, but what we give of ourselves to others.
He leaves a legacy of faith, integrity, generosity, and love that will continue through the families he advised, organizations he strengthened, people he mentored, and those who loved him.
A life of purpose. A lifetime of service. A legacy of love.
