Lynn B. Sexson, a woman of extraordinary kindness, love, and boundless optimism, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 in her beloved Indianapolis. Born in Evanston, IL on July 12, 1933, Lynn spent the majority of her life in Indianapolis.
She was the first-born child of Richard and Maxine Boatman. Lynn graduated from Shortridge High School in 1951. During her high school years, she thrived in various social clubs, where she not only formed lasting friendships but also encountered her soulmate, Ward Sexson. Lynn went on to achieve a BS degree in Education from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN where her involvement in the Delta Gamma Sorority became a cornerstone of her college experience. She and Ward embarked on a lifelong journey of love when they exchanged vows on September 8, 1956 in Indianapolis.
Lynn embarked on a dedicated teaching career, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of countless students within the Indianapolis Public School system and later in the Washington Township school system. Her last 19 years of teaching were spent nurturing young minds as a preschool teacher at Epworth United Methodist Church. Balancing her professional commitment with her role as a devoted mother, Lynn ensured her two sons began each day with a warm breakfast and safely boarded the school bus. She was there to welcome them home, a testament to her unwavering devotion.
Active participation in Nora Elementary School PTA and Washington Township PTA illustrated Lynn's commitment to her sons' education. Beyond motherhood, Lynn found fulfillment in her involvement with the Junior League of Indianapolis, the Children’s Museum Guild, Trailing Arbutus Garden Club, and the Progressive Club. These endeavors not only enriched her life but also led her to forge enduring friendships.
Together with Ward, Lynn discovered a shared passion for travel, particularly to the western United States. Their six grandchildren were treated to individualized journeys out West, a tradition that held a special place in each grandchild's heart. In her role as Nana, Lynn provided journals and cameras to document their adventures, infusing history into each stop along the way.
Being a part of the Sexson family Indianapolis 500 tradition was very important to Lynn. She attended over 60 Indy 500 races always providing traditional homemade sandwiches and brownies for all the family.
Lynn's artistic prowess was undeniable. Her paintings, intricate in detail, reflected a talent that brought joy to all who beheld them. Her craft skills, impeccable for school projects, further exemplified her creative spirit.
Through every chapter of her life, Lynn bestowed love, support, and unwavering devotion upon her family. Her encouragement and hopefulness were beacons of strength for all fortunate enough to know her. A true friend, Lynn's resilience and fortitude were a source of inspiration.
