Margaret (Margy) Hynes Gray peacefully left this earth on April 21st surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 7, 1932 the youngest child of Irish immigrants, James and Bridget Hynes. Margy had a modest upbringing in the Holy Cross neighborhood of Indianapolis but the strong love demonstrated by her precious mother infused her life and those of her siblings, Patrick Hynes, Bea Ackelmire and Helen Clancy who have all preceded her in death. Margy attended high school at Saint Mary Academy in downtown Indianapolis. Her Irish Catholic upbringing was a defining characteristic of her life.
At the advanced age of 18, she married the love of her life, J. Thomas Gray, with whom she shared 65 years of marriage until his passing in 2015. She has missed him every day since. From the early days of their marriage when a big adventure was a fish sandwich on a Friday evening to their eventual beautiful trips with friends, they shared life with love, laughter and devotion.
Margaret had style! Her home was always immaculate and tasteful. In early years when she only owned one “nice” dress, she could turn heads as the beauty in the room. Even in her final days, she was called by those around her as a “fashionista”. She loved a day of shopping with her daughters enjoying their company but, we must be honest, shoes were also an important component.
Margaret was a dedicated hospital volunteer at Community North Hospital for many years and created a network of friends that enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.
To all who knew Margy, it was overwhelmingly clear that nothing was more important or treasured than family. She was a devoted, proud mother to her three children and their spouses: Mike & Diane Gray, Carol & Rick Storm and Colleen & Thomas Kuhn. She relished her 10 grandchildren: Bobby Gray (deceased), Erin Ruppert, Kristin Wilcoxen, Mason Storm, Kevin Storm, Caitlin Dugdale, Colin Dugdale, Sean Dugdale, Aaron Tulledge and Josh Tulledge. Margy and Tom attended countless baseball games, swim meets, band and choir performances, and so much more. Family holidays were enjoyed together and were defined by great food, many laughs, hugs and lively double-deck euchre tournaments.
Margaret’s pride and joy of family extended to her 13 great-grandchildren to whom she was affectionately known as “Mo Mo”. Visits by these little ones to Greenwood Village South brightened her days! The family is so appreciative of the loving, attentive care received at GVS.
Margy will be dearly missed but her memory will continue to burn brightly!
A visitation for Margaret will be held Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Leppert Mortuary – Nora, 740 East 86th St, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 PM.
