Marjorie Jean Stevens, 96, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024. Born on November 27, 1927 to the late Leo and Mary Agnes Filcer, she was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Robert E. Stevens; her sons, Mike and Bob Stevens; two grandsons, Chris Stevens and Ryan Powell and her four siblings.
She grew up on the northside of Indianapolis and graduated from St. Agnes Academy. Margie had a passion for music which began as a child playing violin, tinkering on the piano, and singing. Her desire to serve people led her to pursue a nursing career. She graduated from St. Mary’s in Evansville with her Registered Nurse Degree and touched countless lives with her kindness and compassion during her career. One such encounter came early in her nursing days at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis, when she met a patient who became her future husband. She and Bob were married on November 3, 1951 and as their family grew, they moved to Carmel, IN.
As early members of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, they became involved in various ministries. Margie served as Choir Director for several years and continued in the choir for decades.
After Bob’s death in 1983, she accepted a position as the school nurse at Carmel Junior High School and continued to raise her younger children while becoming even more devout in her faith.
Having been afflicted with dementia/Alzherimer’s, Margie spent the last 17 years in assisted living at St. Augustine Home for the Aged. The family is very grateful for the amazing care the Little Sisters of the Poor and their staff gave her for the eleven years she resided there.
Margie is survived by 6 of her 8 children: Mary Lou (Michael) Powell, Patty (Don) Schweitzer, Mark (Lenora) Stevens, Sally (Terry) Murphy, Katie (Denny) Walker, and Andrew Stevens. Grandchildren: Jeni (Clay) Hicks, Deanna (Yuri) Alberson, Jessica (Andy) Leishman, SuEllyn Stevens, Joseph and Elicia Schweitzer, Jon (Taylor) and Matthew Conwell, Olivia, Caroline, Gabrielle, and Max Walker, Isaac and Morgan Stevens.
